Transform Your Living Room With Room Dividers

Article by Oleg Oyfe

Room dividers are an excellent way to maximize the amount of space you have in your home. You can literally transform your living room with room dividers. When most people think of room dividers, they think of folding screens. Folding screens were first used in Japan around the seventh century, but today, room dividers are more than just screens. And, there are so many creative ways that you can use room dividers in your living room.

Create a Cozy Nook

While a large living room is great for a family, it definitely doesn’t give you any privacy. A room divider can help you create a private little hide away where you can read, listen to music or just have some alone time. Just choose one corner of the room and add a comfy chair, small table and a reading light. Place the divider around the corner and you have your own little cozy nook.

Create a Small Home Office

If you have been dreaming of having a home office, but just don’t have a spare room, you can create one with a room divider. It’s a easy, affordable way to make a private area where you can work or study. Use the divider to section off a area in the living room. Add a desk and a chair and you have an instant home office.

Hide Clutter With Room Dividers

It can be really hard to incorporate storage space into any room, even a large living room. Most people don’t even realize that they can actually create a storage area with room dividers. Choose a room divider that compliments the decor of your living room. You can place storage carts, shelves, baskets and other storage items behind the divider. No one will even know that you are using the room divider to hide clutter.

Add Shelves With a Room Divider

Today, folding screens aren’t the only way to divide a large living room. There are shelving units that are specifically designed to be used as a room divider. A room divider shelf that has a back will allow you to add privacy and turn one room into two. An open backed room divider will give you a separate space while at the same time keeping it open to the rest of the room.

Add Ambient Lighting With a Room Divider

Lighting is one of the best ways to create a mood in any room. And, a room divider is ideal for adding a light effect to your living room. Choose a room divider that is made with a translucent material and place a light behind it. Place the divider in a corner behind a chair, couch or table. The divider will diffuse the light and create a soft glow in the room.

Be Creative With Room Dividers

Room dividers come in so many beautiful designs that anyone can find a way to add one to their living room. If your living room doesn’t have a focal point, you can use a decorative room divider to create one. If your living room has two entry ways, you can hide one with a divider so you can utilize the extra wall space. Remember, room dividers aren’t permanent, you can always move them around until you find the perfect location.

Selecting Your Bathroom Lighting

Article by Jerry Shearier

Having the right lights in your home can have an important aesthetic effect on its occupants. And that’s especially true for the bathroom. And the best bathrooms have lighting coming from more than one place.

You can’t find a better kind of light than natural light to use in a bathroom. Typically the natural light comes from either an overhead skylight or a big window in one or more of the walls of the bathroom. When you have natural light flooding into a room, it makes the room seem larger and more spacious.

If you decide to have windows or skylights in your bathroom, the biggest thing that you have to worry about is keeping it weatherproof. You want to be be sure that the window seals are airtight and that the “R’ value is high enough for your environment. Because, especially if you live in a cold weather climate, you don’t want cold air drafts intruding on your time in the bathroom.

A second kind of lighting is the ceiling bathroom lighting fixture. This nearly always is the standard lighting in a bathroom. You can have a flush mounted fixture. Alternatively, you can hang a chandelier or other hanging type of fixture. Use your personal sense of style as a guide to the type of fixture that you choose.

When choosing a fixture, keep the size of your bathroom in mind. For example, in a tiny bathroom or a bathroom with low ceilings, a chandelier fixture may take up so much room that it looks totally out of place. On the other hand, in a large room, a flush mounted fixture may disappear into the ceiling and provide no impact.

In the modern bathroom, it is just about a necessity to have so called vanity lighting. Most women especially love this. The presence of vanity lighting makes the whole process of putting on makeup so much easier. Overhead lighting is a standard, and is usually hanging from the main ceiling fixture. Side lighting on the vanity, either in addition to or in place of lighting on the top of the vanity helps to eliminate the shadows that people with just overhead lighting encounter. Not only that, but vanity lighting provides you with lighting where you most need it – in the area just above the sink. It is a good idea to place long lasting bulbs in your vanity if you want to cut down the frequency with which you have to change the lights.

If your bathroom is larger than normal, recessed lighting can give you that extra lighting without detracting from other fixtures in your bathroom. Plus, recessed lighting can add a bit of elegance, style, and flair to the room that is otherwise lacking. The biggest problem that you will have will be wiring the ceiling to power the recessed cans. If you want to save a bit of money, track lighting is a decent alternative to recessed lighting. The look won’t be quite as clean. But the price should be considerably less.

One thing that you should provide for all of your bathroom lighting is dimmer switches. You will be glad you did. This allows you to adjust the mood of the room for those romantic times that you spend in the bathroom, spa, or sauna with your partner.
